Chicken Soup for the Volunteer's Soul

Volunteer's Creed

Though my troubles and my worries
are sometimes all that I can see -
still I always must remember
life's not only about me.

Other souls are also hurting
and I know that it's God's plan
to reach out to help another -
to extend them my hand.

With this purpose as my focus -
to be a comfort to a friend -
all my troubles and my worries
seem to fade out in the end.

It is one of God's true lessons -
how my walk is meant to be -
true happiness I find when
life's not only about me.

Prayers Appreciated

Eight years ago, LCS began inserting prayers or
affirmations in the bags and boxes of food we
distribute. Sometimes we wonder if they are being read. The other day at the Bridge of Hope grocery club in Wilmington’s Southbridge area, one of the participants double checked her bag to make sure that a prayer was there. She said that she really enjoys the prayers, keeps that month’s up on the refrigerator, replaces it when the next month’s prayer arrives, and saves all of them in her bible. Quite an endorsement! Prayers are posted on our blog:

Volunteer Goes Back to Work

LCS values its volunteers a great deal, because without them we could never help as many people as we do. Our volunteers come from all walks of life and volunteer for lots of different reasons. Not many people realize that one of our goals in the volunteer program is to provide a place to learn skills that can help prepare volunteers to enter or reenter employment. We recently heard from one such volunteer who had searched for and found a job. “I cannot thank you or all the nice people at LCS enough for helping to ease my transition back into the workforce. I honestly could not have gotten this job without you…. I come home at the end of the day relaxed and with a feeling of accomplishment, rather than feeling dead tired, overwhelmed and hopeless like I did five years ago…. It really feels like I may have struck gold.”

New Online Tools! Last year LCS introduced online registration for the Walk Run. This year we’re outdoing ourselves! As soon as you register you get your own fundraising page. You can:
  • Personalize your page and use it to set a personal fundraising goal
  • Send the link to your friends and family for easy sponsorships
  • Track your online sponsorships and the checks and cash you take in
  • Link to your Facebook page to keep your sponsors updated about your goal

Walk/Run Registration Now On-Line!

Good news! Heather, our IT extraordinaire has our 22nd Annual Hunger Walk Run On-Line Registration available up and live and ready and all set and GO!

That means you can go there now and register and set your fundraising goal while working towards it over the summer. Because if you think about it, September is really not that far away. Just a few BBQ's,  pool parties and one or two mad dashes of back to school shopping and it's here before you know it
. All you have to do is click on the image above and it will take you right over to the fundraising page. Once there it will instruct you on what to do. On-line registration is the easiest way to participate, and lots of new stuff has been added. Here are some of the new things straight from the IT headquarters commander, HeatherTeig herself....

Teams: In the past we’ve been forced to make your church or school your team due to the restrictions of our system. Our new registration allows you to choose an “Affiliation” (this will be the church, school, or organization you want credited with your participation) and set-up or join a team. For instance, you could set your “Affiliation” to Your Church and then create a “Team” with your Bible Study, creating a goal just for your Team! We feel this could be a wonderful opportunity for Youth Groups, School teams, Church groups or corporate departments to track their sponsorships while still contributing to their organization at large

Registration:
We’ve always offered free registration (and t-shirts) to those youth who raised $25 or more and adults who raised $50 or more. When you register you’ll be asked whether you plan to be a “Fundraiser” or a “Registrant”. If you choose Fundraiser, registration is free as long as you raise the requisite sponsorships. You’ll also be given the option of making a donation to get yourself started if you wish.

Personal Fundraising:
Once registered you’ll get access to your “Personal Fundraising Page”. You can set your fundraising goal, add pictures, and arrange the page to your liking. You’ll also be able to send emails to friends and family right from your page with a link to make sponsoring you super simple! You can also integrate with Facebook.

4
Thermometers: Everyone loves watching fundraising thermometers grow! Not only will you be able to track your personal and team goals, the registration home page will show you how LCS is doing overall!

Hopefully you’re as excited to get started as we are! Click here to get started and don’t forget to Like us on Facebook for regular Walk Run updates.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions you have regarding registration. I look forward to seeing you in September!

Blessings,

Greater Power

Every month we have a pastor/reverend from a different church write us a new and inspirational prayer to offer the recipients of our food services. We place a copy of this prayer into each of the grocery bags we hand out and then they can take it or leave it, most take it. We feel that most who come to us are having a pretty rough time and could use some comforting words to help them through, every little bit helps.

So I thought I would start to share the monthly prayer.

Here is Junes prayer:

I
n spite of all the riches and resources of this country, we are still confronted with the curse of widespread hunger. Too often we take our daily bread for granted while others go hungry. Let us not forget those all over the world who must struggle to feed themselves and their families. Those who are hungry need the gift of food as well as the Word of God. Help us to remember the needs of the whole man. Let us receive this food package with a heart of thanksgiving. May it serve as a reminder of your faithfulness in every circumstance and every situation. Lord, teach us to trust you with all that we have.
We pray this prayer in the wonderful name Jesus, the
Bread of Life. Amen.
